Since the test portfolio became fully invested in July of 1996, through 9/30/2017, it has grown from $50,000 to $441,979.82 or 783.96%, while the Vanguard 500 Index Fund grew 474.52% over the same period. For 2 for 1, that’s an annualized return of 10.85% per year vs. the Vanguard 500 Index Fund’s annualized return of 8.61% over the same period. The 2 for 1 portfolio is a real portfolio of 30 large and small cap stocks in my E*Trade IRA account. The Vanguard 500 Index Fund tracks the S&P 500 but also collects dividends from the companies in the Fund and pays a minimal management fee to Vanguard before results are released. Our comparison is for information only. It should not be assumed that recommendations made in the future will be profitable or will equal the performance of the securities now held in the 2 for 1 portfolio. Since inception, including the test period, 2 for 1 beat the Vanguard 500 Index Fund every calendar year from 1992 through 1997. The streak was broken in 1998 and 1999, which was an extraordinary time for the large cap and hi-tech stocks, companies not favored by our value investing style. Over the next decade, we again beat the Fund every year except for 2006 and 2008. See below for year by year results. The 2 for 1 numbers include reinvestment of all dividends and capital gains for the 2 for 1 portfolio and reflect transaction costs based on the use of a deep-discount electronic brokerage service. This performance is the result of both our stock picking and the 2 for 1 portfolio management procedure. Subscribe now to gain immediate access to the latest issues of 2 for 1.
